
The winners of the Digital Media Awards Africa, which recognise outstanding achievement in digital media in the region, have been announced. Projects from South Africa took the top prizes in five of the eight categories. Netwerk24, a news website, won Best Data Visualisation for its use of interactive dashboards to advise users on dealing with the country’s energy crisis. Daily Maverick, also a news website, won Best in Audience Engagement for its series of webinars; Best Digital Subscription Initiative for Maverick Insider Marketing; and Best Newsletter for Your Questions Answered. News24, part of the Media24 group, won Best News Website and Best Use of Video for Killed For Being Queer, a documentary about a series of attacks against LGBTQ+ people in South Africa. The Best Podcast award went to Food For Mzansi for its helpful and supportive Health For Mzansi podcast. The Best Trust Initiative prize was awarded to Nigerian start-up GMEM for its campaign against fake news ahead of the country’s 2023 elections. The winners from all eight categories are automatically entered into the next level of competition for the Digital Media World Award Winner 2023, to be presented at the World News Media Congress in Taipei.
