The battle of Bakhmut between Russia and Ukraine has now become the longest-running battle of the Ukraine war. Despite fighting off Russian troops and conscripts for seven months, and a daily death toll reportedly reaching 1,000 per day, Ukrainian forces have managed to hold the town, inflicting catastrophic losses to Russian forces with some estimates of over 10,000 dead. Experts have been predicting a large winter offensive by Russia that, as yet, has never materialised; foreign intelligence suggests Russia is currently shifting to a defensive posture in anticipation of a massive counterattack by Ukraine. The cost of the conflict, both financially and diplomatically, has been significant, and the call for help goes out for more military chaplains to support young soldiers in the field, helping them retain their humanity amidst the chaos of war.
