Twitter blue tick cull – The Pope, JK Rowling and Ant and Dec among hundreds of thousands losing their verification | Science & Tech News

Twitter has started to remove “legacy” blue ticks from verified accounts, including icons such as JK Rowling, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Pope. Twitter had around 300,000 verified users under the original blue tick system, many of them famous athletes, musicians, and journalists; this has now been removed, making it harder to ascertain which accounts are legitimate. The only blue ticks remaining will belong to those with a Twitter Blue subscription or affiliates of the company, with gold ones indicating verified business accounts and grey ones indicating government, multilateral organizations or official ones. Twitter originally allowed users to pay for a tick, but the move backfired when fake accounts impersonating brands, celebrities, and politicians became prevalent. This pause led to the eventual introduction of different coloured ticks and the relaunch of Twitter Blue. Finally, Twitter removed the previous verified ticks, making it much harder to identify legitimate accounts. The change is set to bring to an end one of the most controversial initiatives of Elon Musk’s leadership of the platform.
