Tornado Cash Developer Will Finally Be Released From Jail: Report

Alexey Pertsev, the developer of crypto privacy mixer Tornado Cash, is set to be released from jail next week and will await trial at home. Pertsev was arrested in August 2021 in Amsterdam following the Office of Foreign Assets Control’s (OFAC) sanctions against Tornado Cash. Despite no formal charges being laid at the time, the developer was denied bail and forced to remain imprisoned for several months. It was later discovered that Pertsev had worked at a Russian firm, Digital Security, which had provided support to the nation’s FSB. The sanctions against Tornado Cash were met with outrage across the cryptocurrency space for the overly harsh treatment of a software developer. Despite the sanctions, Tornado Cash is still accessible, and earlier this month, over $600,000 in stablecoins from the 2021 Maker DAO hack were sent through the protocol.
