The Oakland Athletics have signed a binding agreement to purchase land in Las Vegas for a new ballpark, marking the end of the team’s long tenure in Oakland. The team had been seeking a new stadium for years, with negotiations most recently focusing on a waterfront site near downtown Oakland. Oakland officials have expressed disappointment with the team’s decision, but the A’s have said that despite efforts from fans, city leaders, and the broader community, there has been little forward progress on building a new ballpark in Oakland. The A’s hope to break ground on the new stadium next year and begin playing there by 2027. Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. and would become the third major professional sports team to call the city home, joining the Raiders and the NHL’s Golden Knights. The team’s move would also mark just the second time in over 50 years that a Major League Baseball franchise has moved cities.
