The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed supply chain weaknesses in the semiconductor industry, leading several countries to invest in their own homegrown facilities. The battle for semiconductors, a key ingredient in both basic and advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), was once thought to be solely the responsibility of the private sector, but this is no longer the case. Concerns over Chinese aggression toward Taiwan, where Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) produces over 90% of the world’s highest-performing microchips, have led several countries to invest heavily in their own semiconductor facilities. The war in Ukraine has also contributed to concerns about supply chain risks in the semiconductor industry.
