‘Senseless, barbaric, brutal’: Children ‘among 100 dead’ as Myanmar military targets village event | World News

The Myanmar military has admitted to carrying out an airstrike on a village event in the Sagaing area of northwest Myanmar, which is feared to have killed up to 100 people, including children. The UN Human Rights chief condemned the attack, saying that it “appears schoolchildren performing dances, as well as other civilians… were among the victims”. Military officials defended the attack, stating that innocent civilians were killed because they were “forced to support terrorists”, while opponents of the regime described the attack as “senseless and brutal”. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in 2021, with some opposition groups taking up arms and the military responding with airstrikes and heavy weapons. The UN Secretary-General has condemned the attacks and repeated his call for the military to “end the campaign of violence against the Myanmar population throughout the country”. Myanmar’s military broadcast channel Myawaddy claimed that the attack was carried out on a ceremony held by the opposition National Unity Government to support its armed wing, the People’s Defence Force. A PDF member said that about 100 bodies, including 16 children, had been cremated following the attack, while residents and media reports put the death toll at between 80 and 100 people.
