Sam Bankman-Fried’s Legal Team Can’t Figure Out How to Install Spyware on His Parents’ Smartphones
Lawyers for crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried have encountered difficulties in complying with a bail condition that involves installing spyware on his parents’ smartphones. The software was to photograph the user every five minutes to keep watch on who was using the devices. Modern smartphones have increased their security measures with app sandboxing, which create a safe zone for apps, limiting the impact of malicious software or vulnerabilities. Apple, whose iPhones are included in the list of secure devices, rolled out a new lockdown mode for advanced digital threats called iOS 16. Apple’s jailbreaking is not illegal, but it is not authorised by its terms of service and invalidates warranties. Bankman-Fried’s attorneys asked for an extension until 21 April to comply with the judge’s orders while testing a new solution, which has not been disclosed. Judge Lewis Kaplan approved the request, with the defence having already been granted previous extensions on 4 and 11 April.
