A rare hybrid solar eclipse has been viewed by tens of thousands of people along the northwest coast of Australia, as well as parts of Indonesia and East Timor. During the eclipse, which happens approximately once a decade, the sun and moon appeared to be a similar size in the sky. The result was either a total eclipse or a “ring of fire” depending on where the viewer was positioned within the eclipse. The next hybrid solar eclipse is not due to occur until 2031. An annular eclipse is due to appear in October 2023, while there will be a total eclipse in April 2024. Both of these are expected to be visible over the Americas.
