The Instagram head of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Attaur Rehman, was allegedly taken by Pakistani authorities on Thursday as part of a wider operation to crack down on social media activists within ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party. The Federal Investigation Agency, police and intelligence agencies are cooperating in the nationwide operation, which has been launched to counter online smear campaigns against the Pakistan Army. Khan blamed the military, which he says is responsible for abducting his party’s activists, citing several other abductions in recent weeks. The PTI has written to international organisations highlighting human rights violations, torture and state attempts to silence opposition voices. Over 3,000 PTI workers are currently held in jail without a charge, according to Khan. Last year, Khan was ousted from power after losing a no-confidence vote. Since then, he has campaigned for new elections to remove what he has dubbed an “imported government” led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
