Oakland Athletics purchase land for new stadium in Las Vegas

The Oakland Athletics have signed a binding purchase agreement for a 49-acre plot near the Las Vegas strip to build a $1.5bn, 35,000-seat baseball stadium, to solidify their relocation to the city. The team had previously been negotiating with the City of Oakland to build a new waterfront stadium, but Oakland mayor Sheng Thao said the team had no intention of staying in the city and it was not interested in continuing to negotiate. The Athletics will fund the construction of the stadium, but the state government is preparing a bill to allow the team to receive tax credits and other tax benefits valued at close to $500m. The proposed site is one mile north of the Allegiant Stadium, home of the Raiders, and one mile west of T-Mobile Arena, home of the Vegas Golden Knights.
