The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly fielding trade offers for quarterback Trey Lance from other NFL teams, despite previously assuming that he and Brock Purdy would compete for the starting quarterback position in the 2023 season. It is unknown whether the 49ers have real interest in trading Lance, whom they gave up a lot of draft capital for in the 2021 NFL Draft, but there are rumors that he may be traded to the Minnesota Vikings. NFL analyst Adam Schein believes that the 49ers should trade Lance for veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, arguing that Lance may have potential, but he cannot be trusted to pilot a team that is trying to win the Super Bowl right now. Cousins has 11 years of NFL experience under his belt, four Pro Bowl selections, and two in the last two seasons. Lance started as the 49ers’ starter in 2022 but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, with Brock Purdy stepping in for the rest of the way. Purdy is currently recovering from a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, and it is uncertain if he will be available for Week 1 this fall or training camp. Cousins started his career with Washington Redskins, when 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator under his father Mike Shanahan. If the 49ers were to acquire Cousins, one would have to wonder if he would remain the starter after Purdy is fully recovered.
