Minneapolis allows Islamic call to prayer five times per day | Religion News

Minneapolis has become the first major US city to allow mosques to publicly broadcast the Islamic call to prayer, known as the adhan, five times daily all year round. The Minneapolis City Council modified the city’s noise ordinance, which had previously prohibited some morning and evening calls at certain times of year, to allow for the change. The resolution has been welcomed by local Muslim groups, which include three of the 13 members of the city council. The decision attracted no public opposition in a country where anti-Muslim rhetoric and Islamophobia have been rife in the past. Local Christian and Jewish leaders also spoke in favour of the proposal. The move has been heralded as a victory for religious freedom and pluralism.
