Kansas City teenager Ralph Yarl shot after going to wrong house

Protests have erupted following the shooting of a black Missouri teenager who mistakenly knocked on a door while looking for directions. Ralph Yarl, a talented musician according to school authorities, was shot by the homeowner, who was initially unresponsive and demanded he lie on the ground with his hands up. The family of Yarl, who has to pay medical bills of roughly $1.4m, according to a GoFundMe campaign said they were seeking the homeowner’s arrest as a racist shoot-to-kill response. The state of Missouri has a ‘stand-your-ground’ law allowing homeowners to physically defend themselves against intruders with deadly force, but critics say the law provides cover for those who harm, maim and kill others. The UN has warned of systemic racism in US policing following the conviction of Derek Chauvin for the murder of African American George Floyd in Minneapolis last year. Since then, there have been a string of brutal police killings of people of colour, which has seen protests flare up around the world in support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement.
