Japan’s Prime Minister evacuated after terrifying explosion rocks speech | World | News

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated unharmed after an explosion at a port in the western town of Wakayama on 15 April. A man was apprehended on suspicion of throwing the explosive, with local media claiming the device had been in a rucksack. Kishida was due to give a speech when the blast occurred. The incident follows the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who was killed in a similar incident in the western city of Nara last year. Tetsuya Yamagami has been charged with Abe’s murder and further crimes including breaking gun control laws. Many saw the attack as a failure of Japan’s notorious public safety controls. In response to the attacks, protection guidelines have been tightened up for prominent figures.
