Google has merged its AI research divisions, Google Brain and DeepMind, into a single unit, Google DeepMind. The move is seen as an attempt by the search giant to compete with OpenAI. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said the combination would significantly accelerate progress in AI. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said the unit would bring together world-class talent in AI with the computing power, infrastructure and resources to create the next generation of AI breakthroughs and products responsibly. The teams will work closely with other Google product areas. Eli Collins, VP of product at Google Research, will become VP of product at Google DeepMind, while Zoubin Ghahramani, the lead of Google Brain, will be part of the Google DeepMind research leadership team. Jeff Dean is to become Google’s chief scientist, reporting to Pichai.
