Google Bard adds coding to its AI chatbot skillset

Google has updated its generative AI tool, Bard, with new capabilities for code generation, debugging, and explanations of code for beginners. Bard’s code generation can work with over 20 programming languages including C++, Go, Java, Javascript, Python and Typescript. It can also help to debug code by troubleshooting problems and provide a breakdown of the coding language and what a block of code does. Google’s move to add programming capabilities to its AI chatbot comes amidst increasing competition from OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing Chat. Google launched Bard after declaring a “code red” in response to the launch of ChatGPT. The latest capabilities offered by Google align with similar programming capabilities offered by its rivals. While announcing the new coding features, Google cautions that Bard is an experiment, meaning that it may confidently give users false or misleading information. Paige Bailey, Google Research’s group product manager advises users to always double-check Bard’s responses before relying on it. Bard’s latest update will be useful for new programmers who can share code snippets and get a breakdown of the coding language. The update will also enable those who require assistance with troubleshooting their code to seek help from Bard.
