Despite a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid that saw them crash out of the Champions League, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard insisted that there were real signs of improvement from his team. Lampard argued that the Blues were the stronger side on the night, saying, “We played really well for 60 minutes… But for 60 minutes, really good. Really good chances. At this level, you want to take them. You have to take them.” However, Lampard admitted that Chelsea’s ongoing struggles in attack had come back to bite them again, saying, “It’s not for the want of trying. We got numbers in the box, got into loads of crossing positions, so I’ll never criticise the lads for that, but it’s a fact that if you can’t take those chances, the tie goes 2-1 at any point and you’d really feel the crowd turn.” Despite the defeat, midfielder Conor Gallagher added that he felt Chelsea had played well and had a lot of chances, which was “a big improvement on recent performances.” Chelsea, who are currently on their longest run without a win since February 1995, will now focus on ensuring they don’t end up in a relegation battle, with upcoming games against Brentford, Nottingham Forest, and Bournemouth. Lampard stressed that regardless of the opposition, every game was important and that the standard of play couldn’t drop, saying, “I won’t let anyone off the hook in terms of seeing this season out. It has to be the opposite.”
