German magazine Die Aktuelle has come under fire after it published a fake “interview” with seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher, which was actually generated using AI. The interview was created using Character.AI, a web-based app which uses neural language models to create human-like text responses. An image of Schumacher, who has been out of the public eye since a brain injury in 2013, accompanied the headline: “Michael Schumacher, the first interview.” The revelation of the deception was reportedly included towards the end of the article. Schumacher’s family is said to be taking legal action against the magazine. The incident follows reports of an AI-generated album by British rock band Oasis and an AI-generated song falsely attributed to stars Drake and The Weeknd.
