Inter Press Service has reported on various updates related to the Ebola virus outbreak in Uganda and other countries, covering a span of several years. The most recent announcement, in March 2023, warns that another Ebola outbreak is not a matter of if, but when. In January 2023, Uganda declared an end to a deadly Ebola virus outbreak, with a total of 55 deaths. Before that, in December 2022, the UN warned that despite efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, cholera, Ebola, and Monkeypox outbreaks were still causing global concern. Furthermore, HIV/AIDS eradication by 2030 was under threat, but hopes were raised that malaria treatment could be improved with a new vaccine. In November 2022, three Ebola candidate vaccines were expected to be shipped to Uganda. In October 2022, the UN reported that the Ebola outbreak in Uganda was a cause for concern, and there was a “worrying upsurge” in deadly cholera cases. In September 2022, seven Ebola cases were confirmed in Uganda, and the UN scaled up its response to the outbreak. The same month, an outbreak was declared in Mubende district in Uganda, and the WHO supported the DR Congo authorities as Ebola resurfaced in the volatile eastern province of North Kivu. In August 2022, the WHO recommended two new drugs to treat Ebola, and Ghana prepared for a possible Marburg virus outbreak. In July 2022, DR Congo declared the end of its 14th Ebola outbreak, and a vaccination campaign began in the northwest of the country after a new outbreak was declared in April. The outbreak was declared over in May 2021, and in August 2021, an Ebola case was confirmed in Côte d’Ivoire—the first case since 1994. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cited previous public health crises, including HIV/AIDS and Ebola, and acknowledged the positive role of religious leaders during these crises. Meanwhile, a new Ebola vaccine offers hope, as a trial involving over 11,000 participants in Guinea has shown it to be effective.
