Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, has been given the all-clear to return to football activities by three medical specialists after his heart stopped during a game in January. Hamlin received lifesaving help when he went into cardiac arrest during the first quarter of the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He is reported to be enthusiastic about the prospect of returning to the sport since being cleared to play. After collapsing on the field following an attempted tackle, medical professionals administered CPR and attended to him for around 10 minutes. Hamlin’s agent, Ira Turner, said he did not require any additional steps to sign or complete before returning to play. The Bills placed Hamlin on the injured reserve list while he rehabbed.
Hamlin set up a GoFundMe page prior to the incident and more than 200,000 people contributed over $9 million to his charitable foundation, which he established for a toy drive. He pledged the money to the foundation after his recovery. Since then, Hamlin has made many high-profile appearances, including honoring the Bills athletic training and medical staff at the Super Bowl and speaking before Congress about the Access to A.E.D.s Act, which would provide funding for automated external defibrillators in schools.
The training incident raised awareness of sudden cardiac arrest as a leading cause of death among athletes. Automated external defibrillators have been linked to saving lives when used quickly in these situations, enabling early intervention until medical professionals arrive. The Access to A.E.D.s Act aims to be a starting point for change and could serve as a model for future expansion of the bill.
