Crypto influencer Ben Armstrong, popularly known as BitBoy, has missed his FTX court hearing over a trademark dispute. Armstrong, who has a social media following of over 1 million, had been sued by FTX exchange for allegedly copying their brand name. BitBoy had been scheduled to appear in court on November 8th, but instead, he was reportedly on a cruise with his girlfriend in the Bahamas.
In response, FTX’s CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried, expressed disappointment and frustration with BitBoy’s absence. Bankman-Fried noted that the missed court hearing could lead to further legal action against Armstrong. BitBoy, on the other hand, posted a video to his YouTube channel, stating that he had not received proper legal notice from FTX about the court hearing. He also claimed that FTX was trying to prevent him from using the phrase “FTX” in his content, despite it being a commonly used term in the crypto industry.
The trademark dispute between BitBoy and FTX began in May 2021, when FTX filed a complaint with the US District Court of the Eastern District of Virginia. The exchange claimed that BitBoy had copied their brand name and logo to promote his own website and social media channels. FTX also alleged that BitBoy had tried to register trademarks for the phrases “FTX News” and “FTX Alert” without their permission.
The case has garnered attention in the crypto community, with some criticizing BitBoy for his alleged trademark infringement and others supporting his right to use the term “FTX” in his content. Some have also questioned the timing of BitBoy’s cruise, as it coincided with his court hearing. However, BitBoy maintains that he had not received proper notice of the hearing and that he intends to fight the trademark dispute with FTX.
