Hut 8 CEO Jamie Leverto has argued that transparency surrounding Bitcoin’s energy usage is key to future improvements in energy consumption across the tech sector. Leverto praised the BTC Mining Council’s quarterly reports, which state that more than 60% of its members’ energy usage comes from renewable sources, up from less than 40% in 2019. Leverto said that the energy usage of Bitcoin mining was “a proof of work” that could serve as an example for the wider tech sector. The CEO also criticised those who focus on bitcoin mining’s energy usage without doing the same for other sectors. Critics such as US Senator Elizabeth Warren have claimed bitcoin’s carbon footprint could rival that of a small country.
