Canada closes embassy in Sudan as violent clashes enter 3rd day – National

Canada has closed its embassy in Khartoum as deadly fighting between the Sudanese army and rival factions continues. At least 185 people have died and over 1,800 have been wounded in the clashes, which have been described as the worst in decades. An EU ambassador was attacked in his residence in Khartoum on Monday, but details on the incident are yet to be released. There is currently no official death toll. Tensions between the military factions have risen due to a framework agreement signed with political parties and pro-democracy groups concerning the integration of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, into the military. The fighting risks tearing Sudan between Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, commander of the armed forces, and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo. The UN and US have called for a ceasefire, and the UN Security Council will discuss the conflict on Monday. Millions of people have been trapped in their homes or wherever they could find shelter due to the violence.
