Former Wagner PMC soldier Azamat Uldarov has recanted a previous statement claiming his unit was responsible for the death of both children and civilians during the group’s operation in Ukraine, allegedly saying he was forced to make the statement through blackmail. Alongside co-interviewee Alexey Savichev, the two men claimed that the group indiscriminately killed males aged 15 or older and were comprised of former Russian prisoners recruited into the company. Critics say the retraction is typical of declining transparency and accountability in Russia, where officials are able to quash dissenting voices. The Wagner PMC is believed to have ties to the Kremlin while leader Yevgeny Prigozhin is linked to several attacks against opposition figures in Russia.
