More than a third of AI researchers surveyed worldwide are worried about the possibility of the technology leading to a “global disaster” equivalent to nuclear war, according to a report by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. The report, called The AI Index, highlights the need for proper regulation of the sector, given the “complicated ethical challenges” that arise from the technology’s capacity to produce text, images and code beyond what was considered feasible just a decade ago. The report notes that bias can be a significant issue and that such systems can also be tricked into anti-social activity.
