At least 270 people have been killed as heavily armed factions backed by rival commanders continue to fight each other in Sudan’s heavily populated cities, despite a planned ceasefire. The violence began on 8 April between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The two forces worked together in 2019 to overthrow Sudan’s former dictator Omar al-Bashir, but this week’s fighting broke out as a result of negotiations over integrating the two forces and disagreements over which general would be subordinate to the other. Al-Burhan dissolved the power-sharing council, which had been formed to oversee a transition to a civilian-led government, and declared he would hold elections in 2023. Of those killed in the current violence, at least 174 were civilians. Three staff members of the World Food Program have been killed. Despite calls from other countries for citizens to shelter in place and contingency planning for potential evacuations, the ongoing violence in major cities has complicated such efforts.
